Sunday Roasts and live Jazz at The White Horse

Hunting out a good Sunday Roast in Peckham

Ah, Sunday, a day for chilling and hunting out a satisfying Sunday Roast - a hunt that led us to The White Horse Pub in Peckham a couple of Sundays ago. The White Horse is set back from Rye Road on the corner near Pedler and Rosie’s (closest bus stop - Nigel Road).

Having undergone a revamp in the last couple of years, The White Horse has upheld its traditional Pub vibe but is working hard to pull in younger punters with weekly DJ nights, pub quizzes, curry nights and Jazz Sundays.

From the outside it’s a smart looking Peckham pub with a tudor exterior and large beer garden, something you would expect from a local boozer. But don’t write it off as an ‘old man’s pub’, The White horse has a lot more to offer and is popular with younger crowds. On entering, you walk into a busy seating area with a large lit up bar taking centre stage, framed by beautiful oak furnishings and a space to the side hosting a small games area. However, the real surprise for us was the charm of the area tucked away at the back of the pub.

Soothing sounds of live Jazz guided us through to the back room. A light airy space adorned with plants, a beautiful chandelier hanging from a skylight window and a cool cocktail bar hidden to the side.

On Sundays whilst tucking into a Sunday roast, you can relax to a laid-back soundtrack from the Jazz band The Harrison Cole Trio. Playing from 3pm, it makes for a pretty chilled atmosphere. The back room is spacious with quite a few tables. Even though it was busy with groups of friends and their dogs (who doesn’t love a pub that welcomes dogs) there is a chance of grabbing a walk-in table, or you can sip on a Bloody Mary whilst waiting for a table to become available.

The roasts on offer are the usual suspects, lamb, beef or pork all served with Yorkshire puds, carrots, roast parsnips, cavolo nero (a kind of cabbage) and gravy (£15/£16). For the veggies, who let’s face it, can get a rubbish deal when it comes to roasts, there is a delicious (we tried it) butternut squash, potato and walnut gratin served with the same accompaniments as the meat roasts (£14).

If you are after a chilled Sunday lunch whilst listening to some cool Jazz, being served by friendly staff then The White Horse is the place to be. They have also recently teamed up with Orbit beers and made their own beer - Parched Pale, worth checking out whilst you are there.
